Are you considering buying a large painting to elevate your space this year but not sure what to go for? Don’t panic, I’ve got you!
When choosing the right size large painting for your home, I advise my collectors to consider the following.
1) Size of Artwork:
– When getting big artwork you want it to command the space it’s in and not look lost. Therefore I suggest getting something to fill 65 – 80% of the available space.
– You want the middle of the piece to hang about 57 inches or 145cm from the floor.
2) Orientation:
– Consider how the piece will hang in the space (Horizontal, Vertical, diagonal) You want to choose something that will create a focal point and visual flow in the space.
-Hanging vertically accentuates height, a horizontal piece would work well above a sofa. Square pieces are really versatile and can work well almost anywhere. If you did favour getting a square piece but wanted it on a wide wall then consider commissioning a Diptych, this way you can fill the space using both pieces as one but also move the two paintings around when you want to change things up.
3) Visualising:
– I don’t recommend using cardboard and putting it up on the wall to get an idea of the size. There is a reason why people don’t choose to decorate with brown cardboard, it’s ugly, feels imposing and it won’t give you a true reflection of what a beautiful piece of art would look like.
– I would suggest using painters tape to mock up the paintings size and shape.
