Tips when Buying Art

Tips when Buying Art - David Kirkman - Abstract Artist

A buyers guide to art:

Buying art, especially if it’s for the first time, can be exciting yet daunting. Here are six tips to guide you through the process:

1. Research and Explore: Take your time to explore different styles, mediums, and artists. Visit galleries, art fairs, and online platforms to get a sense of what resonates with you. When you connect with a piece you will know, and then ask yourself, would you be upset if you missed out on it.

2. Set a Budget: Determine how much you’re willing to spend on your first piece of art. Setting a budget will help narrow down your options and prevent overspending. Remember to consider additional costs such as framing, shipping, or installation when budgeting. Also, don?t be afraid to ask how much a piece is, some people shy away from this question but prices vary greatly even when buying from emerging artists.

3. Buy What You Love: Art is subjective, so focus on pieces that genuinely speak to you and evoke emotions. Whether it’s a painting, sculpture, photograph, or print, choose something that you can connect with on a personal level. Trust your instincts and don’t feel pressured to follow trends or invest in famous names.

4. Ask Questions and Seek Advice: Don’t hesitate to ask questions, whether you’re in a gallery, at an art fair, or browsing online. Gallery staff and artists are usually passionate about their work and happy to provide insights. Seek advice from friends, collectors, or art professionals if you’re unsure about a purchase. When I am dealing with a new client, I am more than happy to provide advice on anything from the size of artwork for the space to how to best hang the artwork.

5. Payment plans: You may find a piece of art you love but would like to split the payments, always ask the gallery or artist if this is an option. Most Independent artists will normally be able to provide different options, I offer three:  1) pay over 3 installments, at 0% through Pay Pal. 2) Pay me directly over a longer period between 3 ? 12 months and the artwork is delivered after the final payment is made. 3) Finance options over 3 ? 12 months, so you receive the artwork straight away, however, the finance company will charge interest.

6) Seeing the work in the space: You may want to see the piece in your space before you buy. Some galleries and artists may provide this as an option, depending on location. Options here may involve in-home viewings or digital mock-ups. I offer both to my clients. Digital mock-ups allow me to show the artwork in your home, just by you sending a photo of the space. These mock-ups are scaled to give you an accurate representation.

I hope these tips help and if you need any more advice don?t hesitate to contact me.
